Anglican Parish of Kingston

Parish life (1)

Main activities and ministries of the parish

The Parish has many active and effective ministries performed by both clergy and laity.

Evangelism

The Parish supports mission work both domestically and abroad. Support for evangelism includes the following areas:

  • World Vision through the '40 Hour Famine.'
  • Sister Margaret Mead, a missionary in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, regularly visits the Parish and shares her experiences with various groups and worship services.
  • Steve and Coralie Preston, Missionaries in the Basque region of Spain: Coralie was originally a member of the Parish Youth Group.
  • Community Alpha program: the Parish provides leaders and support staff.
  • Guest speakers: eg recently the Reverend Tim Costello of World Vision was guest speaker at a Parish Dinner in a local hotel.
  • Baptism Preparation Ministry: preparation of families for the Baptism of children (and adults). There is a dedicated service once a month for Holy Baptism.
  • Home Communion team and regular services at local aged care facilities, and a Care Team visits also.
  • Chaplaincy of local organisations, Kingborough Council, ANZAC Day Dawn Services, Clarendon Children's Home and the local State High School.
  • Weekly counselling at the High School by our Youth Pastor.
  • Cross-denominational involvements, community church events and the local Pastors' Fellowship Group.

Prayer

Prayer has long since been the foundation of all ministries in the Parish. Specific prayer ministries include:

'After Service Prayer Ministry' - Teams are rostered to share in prayer ministry in the Chapel after the weekly 9.30am service at St Clement's Kingston.

Intercessory prayer groups - Various groups meet during the week in the Parish. In addition there is a group that meets prior to the 9:30am service at St Clement's.

Parish Prayer Chains - there are three separate Chains for urgent prayer needs, available day or night.

Worship

Corporate worship remains a key plank in the growth of the Parish. The style of worship is varied; different services cater for different tastes. Worship is:

  • contemporary, based on style of music and employing performing arts including Drama, Liturgical Dance and the use of banners, in particular at the 9.30am Family Service and at Youth Praise Services
  • liturgical, based on the use of forms of worship as set out in A Prayer Book for Australia 1995.
  • sacramental, based on reverence for and sharing of the Holy Communion. The Parish has approximately 50 Layreaders and Communion Assistants who are rostered to assist on a regular basis.
  • Biblically-based in the reading and preaching of the Word of God
  • open to the moving of the Holy Spirit amongst us    Speaking out and praising in tongues, healing, words of knowledge and prophency are part of our experience.

The combination and balance of styles has led the Parish into a unique blend and mix of worship styles.

The music ministry at the St Clement's 9:30am service has been a drawcard for many. The style is generally contemporary and the extended band consists of piano, organ, bass, electric guitars, saxophone and drums.

Members of the music team have participated in outreach in various Missions interstate and intrastate and in community events alongside other worship leaders from the parish and other denominations.

The Youth Band Silverbeat leads worship at monthly Youth Praise services. Silverbeat has also been involved in outreach events including, recently, the 'No Compromise' Youth Conference.
