Prayer

By Margaret Silf
Taste and See - Adventuring into Prayer - D.L.T.

First introduced to us by Alister Palmer - a very readable work manual with delightful art work containing exercises for reflection and mediation. - Judy Flint

'This is an excellent book on prayer and its relationship to every aspect of life. Writing of ordinary things in simple, lucid prose and homely metaphors, the author helps us glimpse God seamlessly woven into earthy experiences.' - Gerard W. Hughes

Landmarks She also has one called Wayfaring, both D.L.T. publishers

An Ignatian Journey, designed to help us discover and deepen our own individual journeys, written for groups and individuals, illustrated with drawings and diagrams containing exercises and suggestions for prayer and reflection.

Daily Prayer and Devotions

The Rhythm of Life - Celtic daily Prayer David Adam - SPCK David was Anglican Minister on Holy Island, England until recently. Helps you to introduce a healthy rhythm of work and prayer into your day with uplifting, sometimes challenging thoughts.

Celtic Daily Prayer - from the Northumbrian Community. (Harper Collins) An excellent book for daily prayer with devotional readings over a two-year cycle. Expensive but worth the cost!

Devotional Readings

The Imitation of Christ - Until the beginning of the twentieth century, this was second only to the Bible, and is making a come-back.

Music

Music Therapy - music to move the mind, body and soul. Erato 0630 11943-2 Superb album for quiet reflection (with one bright track by Vivaldi)

The Yearning Spirit - voices of contemplation by the Tallis Scholars. Gimell 454 993-2 Another wonder-full album of classical church music.

Rachmaninov - Vespers Op.37 Melodia 74321 25188 2 Russian Orthodox choral music. We sometimes use this music with candlelight and incense - you find yourself in another world!

Websites

www.centeringprayer.com Many helpful insights and resources to support a journey using Christian contemplative prayer as well as explanation of lectio divina, a prayerful reading of the bible, as a way into it.

Sacred Space www.jesuit.ie/prayer Has a short daily meditation in the Ignatian style encouraging computer users to pray in the 'sacred space' sitting in front of their computer screens. (Excellent)
